Reconstructing Physical Symbol Systems

چکیده

In attempting to force ALVINN’ into their already bulging symbolist tent, Vera and Simon (1993a, 1993b, 1993c) have burst the seams of the physical symbol system hypothesis (PSSH; Newell, 1980a; Newell & Simon, 1976). We would like to present another view of representation in connectionist networks and respond to statements about ALVINN by both Vera and Simon and Green0 and Moore (1993). In so doing, we will reconstruct the PSSH. The primary error in Vera and Simon’s (1993a) argument is to mistake signal for symbol: “We call patterns symbols when they can designate or denote” (p. 9). This leaves no possibility of nonsymbolic representations. On this view, patterns of neuronal activity in the retina (1993c, p. 125), and presumably even the elementary signaling conventions of doorbells and vending machines (Clancey, 1993, p. 89) are elevated to symbol systems, rendering the concept of “symbol” meaningless. Vera and Simon (1993b) also referred to ALVINN in particular as a “connectionist symbol-processing system” (p. 79), and noted that it is simulated by a von Neumann symbol processor. This conflates what should be two distinct levels of representation, and leads to the mistaken conclusion that any implementation of a Turing-computable function is a symbol processor. We believe that symbol processors are a very special type of device; this is what gives the PSSH significance as a theory of intelligence.

The current pain management interventions are emphasizing on conscious regulation of pain-related behaviors and emotions. In contrast, novel interventions like priming-based ones suggest that behavior- and emotion-regulation happens without conscious selection. Based on the perceptual symbol systems theory, this study investigated the impact of non-conscious exposure to a visual symbol of heali...

Japanese Garden as a Physical Symbol of Japanese Culture

A’ view of nature within the framework of garden and in relation with human needs and drives that satisfy theneed to be rooted has caused the representation of nature in garden to be regarded as cultural heritage. Garden and garden designing are suitable cases for us to study cultural characteristics and traits. Thus, human beings have searched their eternal interest in an ideal and unattainabl...

Symbol Grounding Problem

INTRODUCTION The topic of representation acquisition, manipulation and use has been a major trend in Artificial Intelligence since its beginning and persists as an important matter in current research. Particularly, due to initial focus on development of symbolic systems, this topic is usually related to research in symbol grounding by artificial intelligent systems. Symbolic systems, as propos...

Symbol Systems

A symbol is a pattern (of physical marks, electromagnetic energy, etc.) which denotes, designates, or otherwise has meaning. The notion that intelligence requires the use and manipulation of symbols, and that humans are therefore symbol systems, has been extremely in uential in arti cial intelligence. keywords: symbol, reasoning, intelligence, representation, logic This article has two parts. Artificial Intelligence : Simulated Embodied Agents

Probably everybody has heard of Artificial Intelligence (AI for short), but relatively few people have a really good idea of what the term really means. My purpose here is to introduce a few of the basic ideas behind AI, and to try and offer a means by which people can come to grips with the current state of the art in the field. Roughly speaking, Artificial Intelligence is the study of man-mad...
